Manchester City 1-2 Real Madrid (1-5 agg): Silva sees red as Vinicius seals last-eight spot
Manchester City were unable to mount a second-leg comeback in their Champions League last-16 clash against Real Madrid at Etihad Stadium.
Real Madrid booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League as their 2-1 win over Manchester City secured a 5-1 aggregate victory.
Vinicius Junior's penalty all but secured the win after Bernardo Silva was sent off, with Erling Haaland's scuffed finish before half-time rendered a consolation after the Brazilian winger scored again in second-half stoppage time to clinch the second-leg win.
It was an end-to-end start at Etihad Stadium, with Federico Valverde testing Gianluigi Donnarumma inside the opening minute before Rodri forced a good save from Thibaut Courtois soon after.
The key moment then occurred in the 20th minute, when Silva was shown red following a VAR review for elbowing the ball on the line, and Vinicius made no mistake as he sent Donnarumma the wrong way with the resulting penalty.
The Brazilian winger perhaps should have had a hat-trick, missing two chances in quick succession, while Haaland managed to turn home after Jeremy Doku's deflected cross made its way to the Norwegian at the back post in the 41st minute.
City pushed after the break with Haaland testing half-time substitute Andrii Lunin, who replaced Courtois when he suffered a reported right adductor issue, before Doku saw a goal ruled out for offside. At the other end, Donnarumma superbly kept Aurelien Tchouameni out.
And just moments after Vinicius saw a goal ruled out for offside in stoppage time, he added a second with a first-time finish from Tchouameni's cross in the 93rd minute as Madrid got the better of City once again.
Data Debrief: City go down fighting
It was an impressive performance from the goalkeepers at the Etihad, with City producing 1.91 expected goals (xG) from 22 shots to Madrid's 2.93 from 14 shots, and a combined eight big chances in the second leg.
City were determined to give it everything, highlighted by the efforts of Haaland and Doku. Haaland registered the joint-most shots (seven) and efforts on target (five) in this match, while Doku completed more dribbles than the entire Madrid team combined (seven to six) and created a match-high five chances.
Nevertheless, Madrid have eliminated City from the Champions League knockout stages for a fifth time (also in 2015-16, 2021-22, 2023-24 and 2024-25).
Only Bayern Munich have been eliminated by an opponent on more than five occasions in the knockout stages of the competition (seven versus Madrid).
