Kasper Hjulmand hopes Saturday's chaotic 6-3 victory over Wolfsburg can give Bayer Leverkusen a major boost for the rest of the season, after a stirring fightback eased the pressure on the Danish head coach.

Leverkusen were 3-1 down at the BayArena approaching the end of the first half, and a defeat could have had major repercussions for Hjulmand after five games without a win.

Reports had suggested the Werkself were considering sacking Hjulmand and moving for Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, but they showed tremendous powers of recovery to win a nine-goal thriller.

Alejandro Grimaldo's second goal of the game got them back to 3-2, before Patrik Schick, Edmond Tapsoba, Ibrahim Maza and Malik Tillman struck in the second half.

The result leaves Leverkusen four points adrift of the Bundesliga's top four with six games remaining, and Hjulmand hopes it will give them additional belief in the season's closing weeks. 

"Of course, we're very happy to get the three points, but in a game like that with so much control of possession, we can't concede three goals," Hjulmand told Leverkusen's website.

"Obviously, we have to do better. After half-time, however, we played better football and showed morale and character. This important win can give us a lift for the remaining games."

Forward Maza, who led all players for touches in the penalty area (11) and created the second-most chances (three, behind Grimaldo's four), credited the Werkself for their improvement in the second half.

"We were a bit dozy in the first half and made a few mistakes in defence. But then we all shifted up a few gears after half-time," Maza said. 

"We wanted to be aggressive defensively and offensively, and we managed that. We then did really well. The win was very important." 

Leverkusen visit Borussia Dortmund in a huge game next Saturday, while they also have a DFB-Pokal semi-final tie against Bayern Munich to come later this month.
