Hansi Flick played down the significance of Lamine Yamal's angry reaction in the aftermath of Barcelona's win over Atletico Madrid, attributing the tension to the teenager's failure to register a goal or an assist.

Barca moved seven points clear at the top of LaLiga on Saturday as Robert Lewandowski's fortuitous 87th-minute goal sealed a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Metropolitano.

That came after they watched Real Madrid lose 2-1 at Mallorca earlier in the day, as a result of Vedat Muriqi's stoppage-time strike.

No team has ever failed to win LaLiga after being as many as seven points clear with eight games left, with many believing the Blaugrana now have one hand on the trophy.

But not everyone was happy at full-time, as Yamal – who did not celebrate Lewandowski's goal with his team-mates – shrugged off Flick's attempt to embrace him.

Asked about Yamal's reaction, Flick told DAZN: "Lamine tried everything: he dribbled, he attacked, but he didn't score. 

"He was a bit upset. It's normal. He wants to score goals and give assists. This is a consequence of the game. 

"It was because we didn't play well. We talked in the locker room afterwards and everything is fine. It's an emotional game."

Yamal had more touches (103), shots (seven) and touches inside the area (14) of any player on the pitch, also creating a game-high five chances for his team-mates.

One of those chances was missed by Fermin Lopez in the first half, after Yamal produced a sensational nutmeg and outside-of-the-foot pass to release his fellow Spain international. 

Barca were helped on their way by two big decisions from referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer, who sent off Atletico's Nicolas Gonzalez late in the first half for a last-man foul on Yamal, then rescinded a red card shown to Gerard Martin just 45 seconds into the second period, following a VAR review.

Martin's reprieve came despite replays showing the Barca man caught the ankle of Thiago Almada with his upturned studs, having followed through after clearing the ball upfield.

But Flick agreed with the decision, saying: "I didn't see Gerard's incident back on television. What I saw live is that he took the ball first, and for me, it's not a red card."

Midfielder Dani Olmo echoed those sentiments, saying of the two red cards: "I saw Nico's foul clearly, he was the last man. 

"I didn't see Gerard's live. I've been told that there was contact, but he reached the ball much earlier and the follow-through made him hit him.

"There was contact but I think it would be excessive to get a red card. Almada was walking after 10 seconds, I don't think it was that bad."

Barca and Atleti will do battle again on Wednesday at Camp Nou, in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. They then reconvene at the Metropolitano six days later.
